HT Exam Prep: “Making It Stick: Fixation Techniques for Your Brain”

Kay Basquine November 15, 2025 9:00am CST

This presentation explores how breaking complex histotechnology content into focused, manageable layers can improve memory retention and learning efficiency. Using material from Fixation, a chapter in Freida Carson’s Histotechnology: A Self-Instructional Text, we will demonstrate how to organize and structure study content in a way that supports better understanding and recall. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, attendees will learn how to match specific study methods to different types of content and learning goals. The session is designed with busy professionals in mind, offering realistic strategies that maximize retention within short, focused study periods. The presentation will also feature visual aids created in Canva and interactive exploration with ChatGPT to help reinforce learning and engage different encoding pathways. Attendees will leave with a strategy-driven toolkit they can apply immediately to improve both retention and performance-whether preparing for certification exams or enhancing on-the-job understanding.

Achieving Artifact-Free Ocular Histology for Conventional and Spatial Investigations
Preserving intact morphology in ocular histology has long been a challenge, with traditional cryo- and paraffin-based techniques often falling short. This workshop introduces a reliable method that overcomes these limitations, ensuring high-quality tissue preservation. The technique is easy to implement in most histology laboratories and is adaptable to various research applications, from morphological assessments to molecular investigations. It supports a range of staining and analytical techniques, including hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridization (ISH), and spatial assays.
